WASTE REIMAGINED.
ENERGY REBORN.

At CARMA-H2, we are a dedicated consortium co-funded by the EU through the Clean Hydrogen Joint Undertaking, working to reshape hydrogen production. By harnessing local resources and creating clean, cost-effective solutions, we enable on-site hydrogen generation for sustainable use. Our aim is to empower communities to lead the green transition.

With a circular approach to hydrogen production, our four-year project contributes to Europe’s vision for decarbonisation – taking meaningful steps toward a cleaner future together.

LOCAL WASTE, CLEAN ENERGY

At the Arazuri wastewater treatment plant in Navarra, Spain, CARMA-H2 will demonstrate the power of small-scale, decentralised hydrogen production. Using an advanced protonic membrane reformer (bioPMR), coupled with CO₂ liquefaction, we efficiently convert biogas from organic waste into purified, pressurized hydrogen, ready for industrial applications and sustainable mobility.

Aligned with the EU’s ambitious climate goals, we enhance hydrogen production while effectively managing CO₂ emissions. The technology separates CO₂ as a pure stream, enabling storage and preventing its release into the atmosphere.

We will innovate and deliver key benefits in three areas

  • Efficient & scalable hydrogen production

By optimising conventional methods, CARMA-H2 makes hydrogen production viable for biogas plants, reducing energy consumption and resource demand.

  • Circular economy in action

The integration of hydrogen and CO₂ production supports local industries and green mobility solutions, fostering sustainable energy ecosystems.

  • Maximising local resources

By leveraging underused biogas sources in key regions like Navarra, Spain, CARMA-H2 unlocks new economic and environmental opportunities, benefiting communities and businesses.

PATH TO INNOVATION

Turning wastewater and organic by-products into green energy, CARMA-H2 introduces an advanced modular reactor, the bioPMR, to efficiently produce both pressurized hydrogen and CO₂ in a single, streamlined process.
